Liew Kwai Fei: Manifesto presents a selection of drawings investigating texts of the visual, Chinese, English, and Malay languages. Liew’s playful juxtapositions and deliberate mis-interpretations destabilise meanings and create dissonances which lead us to rethink our assumptions, often with a nod and a chuckle.
Liew Kwai Fei (b. 1979, Kuantan, Pahang) speaks well in broken language. He explores high and low culture alongside issues such as class, nationalism, and race, through an idiosyncratic and hybrid style. His practice includes sculpture and painting, and is contextually specific to the artistic and political landscapes of the time. He likes cool jokes and warm coffee.
The artworks are for sale (from $150), and the artist is joining us for the opening reception on Thu 12 March, 7-9pm.
