The recent AWARE conference lamented about how certain types of “ideal” body images have been perpetuated by the media and its evil counterparts. We all moaned and groaned at how some young girls are going under the knife, whilst others suffer from anxiety and related psychological trauma from peer pressure and bullies. From the size zero jeans, to cellulite creams; from dove adverts to FHM, we are mostly aware of all the perpetrators. But perhaps it is now time to stop pointing fingers, and start dancing!
Post-Museum proudly presents Sharmilah Begum, Singtel’s Cozycot 100 Most Inspiring Real Women, founder and director of Big is Gorgeous (B.I.G.). B.I.G. is a company that has been striving to empower plus size ladies to look and feel like a DIVA since 2006. Under the directions of Sharmilah, it has been actively creating supportive and encouraging community networks that caters specifically to the physical and psychological needs of plus-sized ladies. This includes a shop selling clothes for plus-size ladies, a makeup studio, and a dance studio that hosts lessons in belly dancing, salsa and hip hop.
Join us for an informal/chilled-out session with Sharmilah, who will be sharing her experiences and how she managed to enact real changes in the lives of women. She will be accompanied by the POPPERS, a group of plus sized women under B.I.G. who help to inspire and bring change on the misconceptions about the plus-size community.
It is time for minority voices to be heard. Everyone is welcome!
