Artist Shirley Soh takes us through her process of dyeing with botanicals, making one-of-a-kind eco prints with found leaves and flowers. Bring your own cotton garments that need a refresh or pick from our fashion rescue, and transform them amidst the earthy aromas from steaming the botanicals. Forage in your garden if you want to experiment with your own found botanicals. Tip: flowers seem to work better than leaves.
The workshop will take place in the Project Green showcase in the main atrium of Plaza Singapura. Tools and steaming will be present in this workshop. Suitable from age 12 years and up.
About Shirley Soh
With her interest in the natural world, particularly trees and medicinal plants, Shirley Soh fell in love with dyeing during covid restriction lockdown. She was also looking for ways to declutter, re-use, recycle and upcycle as a coping mechanism to the raging global effects of climate change. Shirley was a part-time lecturer/tutor at Lasalle College of the Arts and has been involved in several community engagement art projects.
About Renew Earth Sweat Shop
An on-going research, community and participatory art project by Post-Museum and Veronyka Lau, Renew Earth Sweatshop responds to the environmental impact and labour conditions linked to the global fashion industry. Renew Earth Sweatshop is an attempt to ‘reverse’ sweatshops – to become what a sweatshop is not, to counter waste, to rethink labour and ultimately to renew our earth. It’s multi-partner community upcycling pop-ups have been showcased at Gillman Barracks, Temasek Shophouse, Asian Civilisations Museum, City Sprouts, Jurong Lake Gardens, Orchard and Harbourfront public libraries and various malls. It’s third season from June 2022 to May 2023 is supported by SG Eco Fund.
